Edgar Ziesemer (father of Ina Berneis) received his photographic training at the Technische Hochschule (Institute of Technology). In 1916 he joined Deutsche Bioscop and began working as a cameraman. Between 1918 and 1920 Ziesemer worked as a camera operator for May Film. From 1921 to 1924 he owned his own production company. In 1925 Ziesemer returned to working behind the camera.

As director of photography, initially still under the guidance of more experienced cameramen, Ziesemer now worked regularly in feature films. Until 1938 he shot a series of lesser films, mostly for smaller private companies and less often for major studios such as UFA. From 1939 to 1941 he shot several fairy-tale films for Hubert Schonger's production company, and from 1940 onwards Ziesemer concentrated on industrial and documentary films. After the Second World War his main field of work remained documentary film, and later also television.
